Preventing unplanned electricity outages with IOT

A city council in Alaska, USA sought to avoid unplanned electric supply outages to customers during the very small duration between failure of regular electric supply and starting of the back-up generators.

This was achieved by installing a battery-based energy storage, that comprised over 13,000 battery cells with 4128 Volts and capable of supplying 10,000 Amps of power to the electric grid through an AC-DC Convertor for up to 15 minutes. It was designed and implemented by a consortium including industry leaders and Alumnus.

Over an 18-month period, Alumnus developed and supported the battery management system. It was able to access, save and track battery data. Workstreams included: 

  • IoT Data Management: Extract data from sensors, using a combination of embedded systems programming, and store them in a central database on a Linux server.  
  • IoT Data Curation Analytics: Compute a set of attributes around Current, discharge rates, predictions around battery Cycle, using the underlying design principles.
  • Data Visualisation: Reporting the conclusions and distribution of datapoints across time / equipment types, through a web application. 

This system has been functioning reliably for over a decade and delivered the required battery backup power without outages.
