Our customer designs and manufactures FPSOs – complex offshore facilities for extracting and processing hydrocarbons at sea. Each project can involve 7,000 – 20,000 engineering drawings, all of which requires senior engineers to manually validate them for accuracy, compliance, and downstream usability. This process is resource – intensive, error-prone, and carries the risk of costly redesigns.
Alumnus built a solution to automate the drawing validation process. The solution utilizes computational geometric algorithms and rule engines to detect errors.
Checks for drafting, bill-of-material, P&ID, layout, and standards-compliance errors
Tracks in-progress drawings and detects updates
Generates annotated copies for easy error identification and resolution
The core complexity of the project was to devise rules that precisely describe the mapping between a set of coordinates (which describes a geometric shape) to a real-life object, while also ensuring continuity across multi-sheet drawings.
The solution enabled better utilization of senior engineers, reduced turnaround time, and caught expensive design errors early – delivering significant productivity and quality gains for the customer.
We believe in making a difference through our work, and we do it with a passionate sense of purpose.
